Is Humidity to Blame for Joint Pain?

Is Humidity to Blame for Joint Pain?

Summer is supposed to be a time to be active and enjoy the variety of outdoor activities we look forward to this season. But for millions of people who suffer from joint pain, high humidity interrupts the fun.  Humidity, along with fluctuations in temperature and weather patterns, can trigger joint aches and swelling by raising overall levels of inflammation in the body. A large, 2016 UK study, appropriately named Cloudy with a Chance of Pain, revealed that damp days accompanied by high wind and low pressure were 20% more likely to lead to painful joints. And when you’re already feeling irritable as a result of the sticky, muggy weather, you may feel extra sensitive to aches in your knees, feet, hands hips and back.  Feel the weather in your bones Many people swear they can ‘feel’ a bad storm coming in their bones, particularly if they live with arthritis, a category of joint function conditions characterized by joint deterioration and pain. The most common forms of arthritis are the result of age-related mechanical breakdown of the joints, or the immune system launching attacks on joint tissue, both of which can significantly impede flexibility and mobility. While science has not definitively proven that your musculoskeletal system can predict bad weather, it does support that changes in body tissue occur when atmospheric pressure drops. Joint tissues swell and stiffen In addition to humidity, hot weather months often bring rapid shifts in barometric pressure, a measure of the weight of air around us, especially ahead of a major storm. When barometric pressure falls, there’s less resistance against your body, allowing tissues such as muscles, tendons and ligaments to swell. And that’s not all – the lubricating fluid that helps keep cartilage flexible and supple, called synovial fluid, thickens under low pressure conditions. Together, the combination of high humidity and low barometric pressure can spell trouble for your joints, leading to aches, swelling and stiffness.   How to manage achy summer joints Don’t let the dog days of summer sabotage your plans. Whether you enjoy lawn games at a cookout, a round of golf on a sunny day or a scenic hike at a state forest, supporting your self-management of joint health can make a remarkable difference in how you feel and move, and in your quality of life.  Eat low-inflammation foods – Nourish your joints with foods that are high in protein for production of cartilage and muscle fibers, natural fats like omega-3s to support joint lubrication, and antioxidants to fight free radicals that contribute to tissue erosion. Top foods include fish high in fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna and mussels, nuts and seeds, particularly walnuts, pine nuts, pistachios and almonds, and bright fruits and vegetables, including berries, broccoli and dark leafy greens. Stay active – On days when you can’t find relief from your achy joints, being physically active is probably the last thing you want to do. But health experts warn that inactivity worsens pain. Gentle, joint-friendly exercises, such as walking and bike riding, help you maintain flexibility and range of motion while reducing pain in the long run.   Keep cool – When humidity levels are soaring, minimize the impact on your joints by staying in the air-conditioned comfort of the indoors and opt for alternate exercise routines, such as online dance videos. Also, consider using a dehumidifier in your home to eliminate excess humidity and create a more comfortable, drier environment.   Drink water – If you’re staying cool indoors and keeping physical activity to a minimum, you may not be drinking enough water, which is essential for producing cartilage-lubricating fluid. Unsweetened herbal tea and decaffeinated coffee count, too, and are deliciously refreshing cold. Take joint health supplements – While nutrients from whole foods is best, it’s not entirely possible to consistently get the high levels of joint builders you need to fight joint inflammation. Of the many types of joint supplements available, omega-3 fats from fish are your best bet. According to the Arthritis Foundation, studies support taking at least 600 mg daily can ease joint stiffness, tenderness, pain and swelling. As you can see, there’s no “one thing” you can do to improve your joint health. But through a comprehensive approach and shifts in your daily routine, you can reduce the daily discomfort and improve your freedom of motion – and sense of freedom overall. And that’s what summer is all about. Finding the Right Supplement Balance for Hair Strength - Biotin, Keratin & More

Finding the Right Supplement Balance for Hair Strength - Biotin, Keratin & More

Thinning hair is a common problem that affects men and women, especially as we age. If you're wondering what to do for thinning hair, an approach that focuses on nutrition may be highly beneficial, provided you choose the right supplements and food formulated for hair health. Read on to learn more about supporting hair health through diet and vitamins. Why Does Hair Thin with Age? There are a few reasons why hair thinning often occurs with age. Let's explore them one by one. Aging Hair Follicles Hairs emerge from sac-shaped structures along the scalp called hair follicles. As we age, changes naturally occur in these structures, leading to differences in the hairs that arise from them. Generally, hairs become narrower with age, appearing less full and voluminous than they once did. Hormonal Changes Levels of sex hormones change as we grow older. In men, testosterone levels decline, and in women, estrogen levels also decline after menopause. These hormonal changes can affect hair growth, causing it to slow. Male and female pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia typically occurs due to the effects of hormonal changes. Stress Although people of all ages can experience stress, older adults often have stressors that younger people don't, such as concerns about retirement or medical issues. Stress can trigger a form of hair thinning known as telogen effluvium, which occurs when hairs move from the active growing phase to the dormant stage at an abnormally fast pace, leading to excessive hair shedding and thinning. Environmental Damage Reactive particles called free radicals help drive the aging process, and they're present all around us in UV radiation and air pollution. Free radicals damage healthy cells throughout the body via a process called oxidation. Oxidative damage to the hair follicles can contribute to age-related changes in the hair. What Improves Hair Health? Although you can find an array of hair care products for thinning hair, these solutions often don't get to the root of the problem. That's why many experts recommend promoting healthy hair from the inside out. Diet to Improve Hair Health Eating a well-balanced diet is important for supporting healthy hair growth, and some foods are particularly ideal for those concerned about age-related thinning. These key foods for hair health include the following: Eggs Eggs are an excellent source of protein and key vitamins such as biotin, folate, and vitamins A and E. Some people apply eggs directly to hair to hydrate and nourish it. Berries Blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and other berries are excellent sources of antioxidants. An antioxidant is a nutrient that breaks down free radicals, reducing their negative effects. This means that berries can help defend hair follicles and other cells from oxidative damage. Spinach Hair thinning and hair loss are sometimes signs of an iron deficiency. A serving of leafy green spinach provides plenty of iron, antioxidant vitamin A, and other nutrients to support healthy hair. Fatty Fish Fatty fish is a source of omega-3 fatty acids. Some studies have shown that these healthy fats may help to support hair growth, but more research is needed to understand their benefits fully. Sweet Potatoes The color of sweet potatoes comes from beta-carotene, which your body converts to antioxidant vitamin A. These tasty vegetables also contain other essential hair health nutrients. Nuts and Seeds A serving of nuts and seeds treats your hair to beneficial protein and essential fatty acids, B complex vitamins, and antioxidant vitamins A and E, all of which may aid in hair health. Vitamins for Hair Health Supplements can bridge the diet gap and help you avoid nutrient deficiencies essential to support hair health. In addition, they can supply your body with raw materials needed to produce hair. Keratin When wondering, what is keratin? Keratin is a protein that is the main building block of hair, skin, and nails. Keratin benefits for hair: Taking a keratin supplement supplies your body with this essential protein so that it can be broken down and potentially used for hair growth. Biotin What is biotin? Biotin is a member of the B-complex of vitamins. Many people take biotin for hair growth, and hair loss.  Hair thinning could be a sign of a biotin vitamin deficiency. Biotin benefits for hair: For hair specifically, a biotin supplement may help stimulate keratin production. Biotin's health benefits go beyond beauty, as your body needs the vitamin to transform food into energy to fuel all of its processes. Collagen What is collagen? Collagen is yet another structural protein found in hair and skin. It is the most abundant protein in the body. Collagen benefits for hair: You may have heard about taking supplements for skin, but is collagen good for hair, too? The answer to this question is a resounding yes. Taking collagen for hair may help support healthy follicles. A Word About Supplementing Safely Please note that while biotin side effects and side effects from other hair support supplements are rare, they can happen, especially if taken at high doses. Supplements may also interact with some medications or be unsafe for people with certain medical conditions. As a result, it's wise to consult your healthcare provider before adding any supplement to your diet. Incidentally, what is a Keratin Treatment? A keratin treatment is a styling service that involves applying a chemical solution containing keratin to hair strands. Also called a Brazilian blowout, keratin hair treatment services leave hair looking straighter and shinier and may reduce frizz. Results from a keratin treatment for hair may last up to six months. In addition, a keratin treatment that’s formaldehyde-free may improve hair health by strengthening the hair strands and making them more resistant to breakage and splitting. How to Improve Hair Health the Simple Way If you want the benefits from the best vitamins for hair health, you don't have to take dozens of supplements daily. Dealing with Brain Fog? These Supplements May Help Enhance Alertness and Focus

Dealing with Brain Fog? These Supplements May Help Enhance Alertness and Focus

A recent large study done in the Netherlands found that rates of mental fatigue and brain fog in adults over the age of 25 have increased by 24% since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. But just what is mental fatigue and what causes it? In this post, we'll delve into the answers to these questions. Then we'll explore some of the best supplements for brain fog, so that you can take steps to address brain fog syndrome. What is Brain Fog and What Does Brain Fog Feel Like? Sometimes called mental fatigue, brain fog is the casual term for a set of symptoms that negatively affect your ability to think clearly. Most people experience brain fog at some point in their lives, and when it happens for a brief period and only occasionally, it may not be cause for concern. However, persistent brain fog can impact your performance at work and school, interfere with relationships, and complicate daily living tasks. Each person may experience mental fatigue differently, but here are some of the primary symptoms of brain fog to look for: Mild Cognitive Dysfunction During an episode of brain fog, you may find it difficult to complete mental tasks that are ordinarily simple for you. For example, you may struggle to add numbers together in your head or you overlook typos in documents that you would normally catch. Confusion Confusion can be one of the most alarming mental fatigue symptoms. You may find yourself struggling to understand complicated concepts or become confused when attempting to multitask. Confusion caused by memory fog may also make it harder for you to stay organized. Forgetfulness Often, brain fog causes memory issues. You may forget deadlines at work or find yourself missing important appointments. Misplacing objects, struggling to recall information you once knew and having difficulty putting names to faces can also be signs of mental fatigue-related forgetfulness. Lack of Focus and Mental Clarity If you're experiencing brain fog, you may feel as if your thoughts are jumbled or muddled. You may struggle to pay attention, even during tasks that you usually enjoy, or find it challenging to tune out distractions at work. What Causes Brain Fog? In some cases, it can be difficult to pinpoint one specific cause of brain fog. Often, the problem arises due to an array of factors. The following are some of the most common causes of brain fog that may be at play: Physiological Changes from Aging As we age, our brains undergo many changes. It’s overall size decreases, and tissues within the brain begin to break down or atrophy. As a result, the number of neurons in the brain, available to relay impulses that power thinking, decreases.  Chronic Stress During periods of chronic stress, levels of hormones like cortisol become abnormally elevated, impacting many parts of the body. In the brain, chronic stress can trigger inflammation and negatively impact signaling between neurons. There is even evidence to suggest that sustained stress can rewire the brain, increasing activity in the primitive areas of the mind while reducing activity in the parts responsible for higher cognition. Overworking Overworking can cause stress that negatively impacts the brain. In addition, too much work has emotional impacts that often lead to mental burnout and make it more difficult for people to think clearly and focus on the job. Lack of Sleep Brain fog is a key symptom of a lack of sleep or poor sleep quality. When you fail to get 7 to 9 hours of quality rest daily, you're more likely to develop mental fatigue. Dehydration Not getting enough daily fluids can make it difficult for the mind to function properly. Dehydration and associated brain fog can also occur if you experience diarrhea and vomiting due to an illness, medical condition, or profuse sweating due to hot temperatures and/or physical exertion. Hormonal Imbalance Brain fog and mental fatigue are common hormonal imbalance symptoms. Women often experience brain fog due to hormonal changes that take place during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause. Medical conditions that lead to hormonal irregularities like thyroid disease can also trigger brain fog. If you are aware that you have such a condition, speaking to your medical provider about how to remedy the hormonal imbalance can often help. Medical Conditions A variety of medical conditions can cause brain fog. Many people with anxiety and depression experience mental fatigue - the problem is also associated with multiple sclerosis, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome and other conditions. Some medications can also trigger brain fog. Vitamin Deficiencies Low levels of vitamin D, iron, vitamin B12, omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients can also lead to brain fog. How to Get Rid of Brain Fog Treatment for brain fog often requires a multi-faceted approach. If an underlying medical condition is responsible for the issue, treatment may begin with addressing the underlying condition. For brain fog not associated with health problems, the following are some potential solutions: * Lifestyle changes: Taking steps to limit stress by modifying your lifestyle can often help ease mental fatigue. * Prioritize sleep: As previously mentioned, consistently getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night can support brain health. * Balanced and nutritious diet: Eating food high in polyphenols and omega 3 foods can be effective. Some examples include nuts, blueberries, leafy greens, avocados, and fatty fish. * Regular exercise: The benefits of regular exercise go beyond strengthening the heart and lungs, easing stress, and supporting mental clarity. * Moderate caffeine and alcohol intake: Both caffeine and alcohol can worsen brain fog, so enjoy them in moderation. Vitamins for Memory and Brain Fog Supplements for brain fog can help address dietary deficiencies and promote improved cognition. If you're looking for a supplement for brain fog, the following are some options to consider: Polyphenols What are polyphenols?: Polyphenols are plant compounds that function as antioxidants, breaking down reactive compounds that drive the aging process. Polyphenol benefits include addressing inflammation and reducing the risk of age-related cognitive decline. Common polyphenol foods: Grapes, blueberries, cherries, blackberries, and spinach. Carotenoids What are carotenoids?: Another type of antioxidant found in plants, carotenoids give plants and algae their orange, yellow and red colors. Due to potential carotenoid benefits, medical providers often recommend them for promoting eye health. Foods with carotenoids: Yellow, orange, and red fruits and vegetables such as pumpkins, carrots, squash, and tomatoes. Omega-3s What are omega 3s?: Omega 3 fatty acids are healthy fats that include EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). These nutrients have anti-inflammatory properties and have been shown to lower the likelihood of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Foods with omega 3s: Edamame, walnuts, ground flaxseed, and fatty fish such as mackerel, salmon, and herring. Other Supplements Some other vitamins and supplements that may help ease brain fog include: * Vitamin C: An antioxidant found in many fruits and vegetables that fights the effects of oxidative stress on cells in the brain and the body. * Vitamin D: An essential vitamin produced in response to sunlight and found in some fermented foods. Studies show that a lack of vitamin D can cause brain fog. * L-theanine: An amino acid derived from green and black tea that may help protect the body from stress and has been shown to improve attention and shorten reaction time. * Ginseng: A supplement derived from the root of the ginseng plant that may offer stress protective benefits and promote increased memory and cognition. Benefit from the Best Nootropics for Brain Fog As you can see, there are many supplements for memory and brain fog, but that doesn't mean that you need to take multiple vitamins per day to address mental fog's causes and symptoms. Body Kitchen Exeed Mind simplifies supplementation with a blend of some of the best supplements for memory and brain fog. Each serving delivers: * Memophenol: A blend of whole grape and blueberry flavonoids that are optimized to cross the blood-brain barrier and provide a dose of protective polyphenols. * Innovatea: Non-GMO caffeine derived from sustainably grown tea leaves that have undergone a fermentation process. * Cocoa bean: A polyphenol-rich extract that has been used since ancient times to combat physical and mental fatigue. * Lutemax 20/20 Lutein: A patented blend of carotenoids derived from marigolds. Diving Deep: Green-Lipped Mussels and Their Many Benefits

Diving Deep: Green-Lipped Mussels and Their Many Benefits

Green-lipped mussels are a unique source of omega-3, a science-backed, natural anti-inflammatory linked to an assortment of important health benefits, from reducing joint inflammation and cellular breakdown, to treating arthritis and asthma. A New Zealand delicacy, these colorful mussels are not readily available as a food source globally, which is why the use of New Zealand mussel nutritional supplements has become an increasingly popular way to get omega-3 benefits. Let’s dive into the facts, science and health benefits of green-lipped mussels. What is a Green-Lipped Mussel? A shellfish from New Zealand, Perna canaliculus – the green-lipped mussel – is found along the 9,300 miles of coastline and sourced for aquaculture under the name greenshell™. Exclusive to this island-country, green-lipped mussels are is identified by its grayish-green shell and signature, vivid green edge. The green-lipped mussel is a staple food of the indigenous Māori, who call it kuku and kūtai in their native language. At about 4 inches in size, it’s larger and milder in flavor than the traditional black mussel, which is roughly 2-2 ½ inches and has an intense flavor. What are Green-Lipped Mussels Good For?  Green-lipped mussels are revered as a potent “superfood” with a complete profile of macro-and micro-nutrients, amino acids and omega-3 fatty acids – especially eicosatetraenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Plus, they contain an assortment of B-vitamins, minerals including zinc and selenium, and other beneficial nutrients, such as chondroitin sulfate.* The New Zealand mussel is exposed to more sunlight as a result of its unique growing environment. In fact, the secret to its high omega-3 benefits may lie in its own nutrient-dense food source: marine phytoplankton. This mussel food floats on the surface of the ocean, where they absorb the sun’s intense ultraviolet (UV) rays. Their naturally high levels of antioxidant offer protection against sun-related oxidative stress that would otherwise accelerate the breakdown and damage of healthy plant cells. In addition to antioxidants, marine phytoplankton also contains an assortment of trace minerals, such as chondroitin sulfate, selenium and zinc, all of which contribute to the nutrient-rich properties of the New Zealand mussel. Natural Anti-Inflammatory Green-lipped mussel benefits are well-documented. Most impressive is the array of anti-inflammatory compounds shown to significantly aid human health. This is why this special source of omega-3 fatty acids can be a powerful ally in the fight against many age-related issues ignited by inflammation and cellular oxidation, including cardiovascular conditions, rheumatoid arthritis and asthma.* While many nutrients contained in green-lipped mussels play strong supporting roles, its omega-3 benefits are largely due to DHA and especially EPA fatty acids. Abundant in fatty fish and sorely lacking in the standard American diet, both EPA and DHA are parts of a group of omega-3 fatty acids, a type of dietary fat involved in anti-inflammatory processes.** Eicosatetraenoic Acid (EPA) EPA fatty acids are essential for healthy aging. There are well-known cardiovascular benefits associated with consuming plentiful quantities of EPA fatty acids, such as supporting balanced triglycerides, blood pressure and a healthy response to inflammation.* Additionally, EPA fatty acids have been shown to have a positive effect in treating arthritis, particularly rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as well as mood and symptoms of menopause.***  Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) DHA fatty acids are the key structural components of the human brain, cerebral cortex, skin and retina, and of all cell membranes.* In pregnancy, consumption of DHA fatty acids is especially significant for the proper development of the fetal brain and retina, where DHA accumulates the most.* In fact, a study on children whose mothers supplemented with a DHA supplement during pregnancy were found to have significantly better problem-solving skills at 9 months compared to those whose mothers did not supplement with DHA fatty acids.* Treating Arthritis   Incredibly, 24% of American adults have arthritis.* Inflammation of the joints can wreak havoc on one’s comfort, mobility and quality of life.  Interest in the health benefits of green-lipped mussels was sparked in the 1970s when researchers observed that the Māori who lived along New Zealand’s coast had a lower incidence of arthritis compared to the inland population.* Since then, dozens of scientific studies have been conducted globally to determine the effectiveness of greenshell™ in treating arthritis, both osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the most common types. Results are especially compelling in its use as an adjunct aid for OA, while studies into the effect on RA remain promising. A look at the studies shows the mussel’s anti-inflammatory properties from eicosatetraenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) may help fight joint inflammation, which is consistent with research on the body-wide, anti-inflammatory benefits of DHA and EPA fatty acids.  Osteoarthritis: A review of four clinical trials indicated that green-lipped mussel extract may improve joint function and comfort in adults with OA.* An additional green-lipped mussel benefit for individuals with OA may be reduction in GI discomfort from taking anti-inflammatory medications, according to an analysis of five studies.* Rheumatoid Arthritis: A double-blind, 3-month study revealed that 66% of participants experienced an improvement across all measurement markers, including joint stiffness, swelling and discomfort.* Results of a 10-week animal model indicated that administering green-lipped mussel had the potential to inhibit inflammation in joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis.*  Humans are not the only mammals to gain from the omega-3 benefits of this New Zealand mussel. Due to the extensive body of research in treating arthritis, nutritional supplements for dogs that feature this natural anti-inflammatory increase options for protecting the joint health of our furry friends. One study revealed it improved the gait of osteoarthritic dogs.*  Treating Asthma Asthma is a respiratory condition that affects 1 in 13 people in the U.S.* Green-lipped mussels can help ease the discomfort of asthma and increase quality of life by fighting inflammation of breathing passages that carry air to and from the lungs. In a 6-week human study published in the journal, Respiratory Medicine, participants with asthma took 400 mg daily of green-lipped mussel extract for three weeks of the study, and a placebo for three weeks. Researchers found that taking the green-lipped mussel supplement significantly reduced airway inflammation and asthma symptoms.*  Consistent with these findings, another 8-week study found that taking 400 mg daily of New Zealand green-lipped mussel extract helped reduce the frequency of asthma symptoms and inflammation of airways.* Inhibiting Pain-Producing Proteins and Enzymes The beneficial, anti-inflammatory properties in this potent mussel acts on certain pain-producing proteins and enzymes found in tissue throughout the body, working in a variety of ways to reduce inflammation and discomfort. In joints, scientists believe that green-lipped mussel may help keep cytokines in joints from flaring up.* These destructive proteins, particularly TNF and IL-1, are implicated in each phase of progression of rheumatoid arthritis, and may be responsible for generating pain associated with osteoarthritis.**  Most cytokines are produced by immune cells in response to inflammation. But when too many cytokines exist, they can go rogue and attack healthy cells, including cartilage-renewing chondrocytes and those that produce synovial fluid. This can lead to excess inflammation and autoimmune issues.* Cytokines also play a critical role in causing and maintaining inflammation of the airways, contributing to asthma and other breathing difficulties.* Are Green-Lipped Mussels Farm Raised?  Most New Zealand mussels are farmed raised along the eastern coastline for aquaculture, an important industry to the island-country. But before they reach the mussel farm, they are gathered in the wild in a process called spat collection – the first in a series of steps involved in mussel farming.* Spat are juvenile shellfish still in larval form that float on the surface of the ocean until they can hitch a ride on a suitable host, like seaweed. Eventually, they wash ashore in the millions, where spat collection takes place. Ninety Mile Beach is the hub of spat collection.* Once at the underwater mussel farms, wild-caught baby mussels are transferred to nursery ropes where they remain for about 6 months before being reseeded on longlines where they remain for another 9-12 months until peak maturity.* Water and mussel quality are monitored by New Zealand government laboratories throughout. During mussel harvesting, barges containing special equipment remove mussels from the lines for processing, which includes sampling the water and mussels for the presence of toxins. The time frame from spat collection to harvest takes about 18 months. Green-lipped mussels to be used for omega-3 supplements are transported to extraction facilities, such as Biolane™. Biolane™ is a premium New Zealand green-lipped mussel extract used in high-quality nutritional supplements that uses a unique process to cold-extract the bioactive portions of the mussels – those rich in omega-3 fatty acids, DHA end EPA, then freeze-dried to preserve potency and freshness. Additional Nutrients in Green-Lipped Mussels  The New Zealand mussel is exceptional in its nutritional profile. Not only is it packed with tissue-building amino acids and prized omega-3s – DHA and EPA fatty acid – it contains many other naturally occurring nutrients, some of which have powerful health benefits of their own and are found in many anti-inflammatory supplements for joint function and other health concerns. Chondroitin Sulfate This chemical is found in human and animal cartilage, the tough connective tissue that cushions joints by absorbing fluid. Chondroitin sulfate may help block harmful enzymes and proteins that attack healthy cartilage, which is especially vital for maintaining healthy knee and hip function as you age.* Because chondroitin sulfate also functions as a building block of cartilage, it is a common ingredient in supplements for joint pain. In fact, scientific research suggests that chondroitin sulfate may be effective for treating arthritis, particularly OA, which develops as cartilage gradually wears away with aging or due to injury.* One such study indicates that chondroitin sulfate can help prevent narrowing of joint space and has anti-inflammatory activity.* Zinc  As an essential mineral, your body cannot produce zinc and is dependent on food and supplement sources. Zinc is involved in numerous health processes ranging from immune function and wound healing (and promoting skin health overall) to DNA synthesis and cell renewal. In addition, zinc also contributes to the chemical reactions of hundreds of enzymes.*  The retina of the human eye contains high concentrations of zinc. Research suggests that taking supplements with zinc and antioxidants have been shown to reduce age-related vision degeneration, possibly by countering cellular damage in the retina.** Iron  This essential mineral is vital for producing hemoglobin, an oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells, and myoglobin, a protein that shuttles oxygen throughout muscle tissues. Iron is necessary for the body to maintain healthy growth and development.*  According to the NIH, rheumatoid arthritis and other chronic health conditions can divert iron from blood circulation and interfere with the body’s ability to use stored iron.* For optimal absorption of iron regardless of the source, consume along with vitamin C-rich foods, such as oranges, strawberries, bell peppers and broccoli. Selenium   The last mineral that is naturally occurring in green-lipped mussels is selenium, a component of various proteins and enzymes that play a role in reproduction, producing DNA and protecting cells from damage. Called selenoproteins, these proteins and enzymes are mostly stored in muscles, but are also highly concentrated in the thyroid gland, where they assist with metabolism of thyroid hormones.* Selenium has antioxidant properties that help break-down peroxides that can lead to inflammation.  Because selenium is a trace element, you only need to consume a small amount for good health. B-Vitamins This family of vitamins helps to convert the food you eat into energy, in addition to many other vital processes. The New Zealand green-lipped mussel contains 5 out of 8 B-vitamins:*  B1 (thiamine) – supports growth and function of cells B2 (riboflavin) – reduces oxidative stress and inflammation of nerves B3 (niacin) – creates energy; repairs DNA; has antioxidative effects B6 (pyrixodine) – helps metabolize macronutrients; supports immune and brain health B12 (cobalamin) – supports metabolism; essential cofactor in DNA synthesis Green-lipped mussel in omega-3 supplements and anti-inflammatory supplements Thanks to advanced technologies in food processing and nutrition, the health benefits of green-lipped mussels are accessible outside of their native New Zealand to anyone seeking natural anti-inflammatory support to help manage joint pain, arthritis, asthma or other health issues.  You can order green-lipped mussels that are packaged for safe home delivery through a few online specialty food retailers, which arrive frozen or fully cooked, depending on your location. But for most people, a green-lipped mussel supplement may be the most convenient way to get the omega-3 benefits. For optimal freshness and potency of its natural anti-inflammatory properties, some proprietary  green-lipped mussel extract brands, such as Biolane™, employ freeze-drying methods to remove water at low temperatures, thus preserving the omega-3s, EPA and DHA fatty acids, in a stable, long-lasting powder.  In fact, powder may be the preferred omega-3 supplement form, according to research. While New Zealand mussel extract is also available in oil form, the powder extract has been shown to significantly improve absorption of EPA fatty acids, according to research.* This may indicate that oil is subject to nutrient oxidation and degradation at a higher rate than powdered extract. These study results are good news to anyone who has searched online for natural supplements for joint pain or for anti-inflammatory supplements in general, and wants omega-3 benefits from this unique and potent marine source.  Written and reviewed by the nutrition and science experts at Body Kitchen, developers of Pro-Mobility featuring Biolane™ green-lipped mussel extract. Summer Hair Care Starts Here

Summer Hair Care Starts Here

Tousled tresses and beachy waves are the look for summer no matter what your age or proximity to the ocean. The vacation vibe that makes the season so special also applies to your hair care as you relax your pace and daily routine. With so many breezy, pulled-back looks to choose from, you can relax from the more time-consuming styles you may favor other times of year. Your hair appreciates the much-needed break, too. Over time, heat styling and blow-drying can ravage hair follicles and rob strands of natural radiance, leading to dry, dull and wiry hair that ultimately needs even more product and styling to tame. And the sun’s intense UV rays during hot weather months can further push hair into damaged territory. But there’s more at stake than dry strands: When follicles become stressed, it can upend your hair’s growth and maturation cycle. The anagen phase – when hair grows – may get shorter while the pace to the exogen (shedding) phase accelerates. And if you’re already dealing with excess hair shedding, it can only get worse.   This summer, protect your hair the way you protect your skin with the right ingredients for maintaining health, strength, growth and shine through the heatwave of summer and beyond. SPF your scalp If you think sun protection is only for skin, think again. Not only is your scalp susceptible to sunburns, especially your part, strands themselves can get fried and discolored as sun rays destroy hair’s pigment proteins. According to scientists, the sun’s UV radiation increases by a factor of 10 during summer, making prolonged exposure all the more harmful when you consider it only takes a few minutes to burn. Apply sunscreen to your part and other areas of exposed scalp. Roots and the first couple inches of hair growth on your crown are most vulnerable, because they get little protection from sun exposure. Whether you use a spray or lotion-base sunscreen, apply some to the palms of your hands and glide them over the crown of your head. When heading outdoors, wear a wide-brim hat to shield your hair, as well as your face, neck and chest, especially if you plan to be out in the sun for extended periods. And if swimming in the pool is your favorite summer pastime, remember to rinse your hair with clean water to remove chlorine and other harsh chemicals that can damage and dry your mane. Lastly, take it easy with hair-care products… the sun can intensify the chemicals, which can further damage your locks. DIY hair repair On those days when you’ve had too much fun in the sun and your strands are paying the price, spend some spa time at home repairing your hair. No fancy products necessary—just use ingredients you have in your kitchen, such as olive oil, coconut oil, honey, an overripe avocado or banana, egg yolk, and yogurt (the higher the fat content, the better). Aloe vera gel is a great way to quickly hydrate and nourish your locks. Make your own soothing hair mask by combining some natural fat, protein and a binder until smooth and creamy. Apply to hair starting with your roots, wrap in a bun and leave on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with warm water. For intensive treatment for dry, brittle hair, wear a shower cap after applying the hair mask. Hair care from the inside While a stylish hat and pretty hair ties are definite summer must-haves, there are other essentials that are even more important to the long-term health and shine of your tresses.  Healthy, beautiful hair is built on keratin—the fibrous protein that comprises up to 90% of hair’s structure. But aging and other factors cause synthesis of keratin to wane over time, which makes loading up on dietary protein necessary to provide the amino acid building blocks your body needs to maintain the steady pace of keratin production needed to reduce excess hair shedding and support growth. Unfortunately, palatable food sources of keratin are nonexistent. So for a direct source of keratin, make Keratin Enrich part of your daily summer hair care routine. It contains clinically studied, natural keratin shown to reduce thinning hair by an incredible 46% when used for 90 days.* Plus, Keratin Enrich contains hair-healthy biotin and a natural absorption booster for enhanced benefits. Pro-Mobility: Your Natural Joint Relief Pain & Mobility Supplement for Daily Relief

Pro-Mobility: Your Natural Joint Relief Pain & Mobility Supplement for Daily Relief

Smooth, supple joints are the foundation of an active lifestyle and maintaining independence as you age. But sadly, millions of older adults miss out on life’s little pleasures due to joint inflammation.  According to a university poll, an astounding 70% of people over 50 experience joint pain.* The “wear and tear” of joints and cartilage in the knees, hips, hands and feet reveals itself initially through stiffness, popping and grinding. As inflammation of the joints increases, it can lead to mobility issues that limit range of motion and interfere with daily living. Springing out of a chair, climbing stairs, opening jars – routine tasks we take for granted become noticeably more difficult. If stiff, sore and achy joints are holding you back from hobbies you love, you’ve probably searched online for joint pain supplements to find a natural solution to reduce the discomfort. How to Reduce Joint Inflammation… Naturally  Natural supplements for joints can promote healthy joints and improve mobility. But there’s a sea of health supplements ranging from omega 3 fatty acids and boswellia serrata to glucosamine and chondroitin. While each ingredient delivers different benefits to help relieve joint pain, one innovative joint pain supplement has emerged as being a “one stop shop” of benefits in one convenient formula.  This breakthrough is not like common supplements for joints found in supermarkets and drugstores. It’s formulated with the most cutting-edge natural extract for joint pain relief – New Zealand green lipped mussels – plus two more patented extracts for combined benefits that are 640% more powerful than glucosamine and chondroitin and start to take effect in as quickly as 5 days.**  Introducing Pro-Mobility Pro-Mobility is a powerful natural supplement for healthy joints that helps you enjoy more ache-free days and active living. By combining three potent, clinically backed joint relief extracts, it can target joint inflammation biomarkers from multiple angles. As a result, Pro-Mobility not only promotes healthy joints and other connective tissue, but also boosts bone health and reduces muscle soreness for a 360-degree approach to rejuvenating and protecting joints from aging, inflammation and wear and tear. Relief From Joint Aches and Discomfort Natural joint pain relief is everybody’s goal after reaching a certain age. But even younger, active adults who want to protect and cushion their joints and reduce muscle soreness for optimal athletic performance are turning to natural supplements for joints.  Pro-Mobility delivers safe and effective relief from aches, stiffness, swelling and soreness with potent, naturally occurring nutrients that help rejuvenate connective tissue for enhanced joints, cartilage and bone health. Formulated by the nutritional experts at Body Kitchen, a trusted name in natural supplements, Pro-Mobility delivers proprietary ingredients that have been clinically studied and created using advanced technologies for isolating the active ingredients known to help promote joint health.  Naturally Sourced Ingredients As a natural health supplement, Pro-Mobility draws its strength from naturally sourced ingredients packed with joint-renewing nutrients and antioxidants, including a protein source that’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Pro-Mobility nourishes cells in your joints and cartilage with concentrated levels of nutrients they need to synthesize new tissue and produce lubrication, but cannot be consumed in high enough quantities through food alone. Healthy connective tissue cells are vital for maintaining round-the-clock processes, such as producing synovial fluid to lubricate joints, promoting the natural repair process, and fighting inflammation – all of which help to relieve joint pain. Uses for Pro-Mobility Most men and women who seek supplements for healthy joints are looking for a natural way to help relieve joint pain, which can be triggered either by mechanical overuse or inflammatory factors. Regardless of the trigger, it has the undesirable effect of limiting day-to-day activities and reducing quality of life.  What makes Pro-Mobility so special is that it not only targets and neutralizes the biomarkers of joint inflammation – it supports the complex system of connective tissue that works together to help you move, grip, rotate and pivot without stiffness, crackling, popping or grinding. In other words, this advanced joint formula makes moving more comfortable.   Happy customers have reported their top 4 health uses for Pro-Mobility:  Relieves Joint Aches Does it hurt to move? Occasional aches and pains may be part of aging, but when deep aches affect your hips, hands and back, making the most ordinary task harder to complete, it can slowly erode your body image and self-esteem. By targeting the sources of those aches and pains, Pro-Mobility helps calm the burning, throbbing and radiating sensation through your body, so you can maintain your zest for life.  And the best part is that you don’t have to wait weeks to feel the difference. One of its ingredients, a unique form of Boswellia serrata extract, was clinically shown to help improve major joint health biomarkers after only 5 days.*  Minimizes Stiffness and Discomfort  “Joint pain” is a catch-all for many different signs and symptoms of joint deterioration. Some describe hearing a crackling noise when they climb stairs or squat down. Others complain of stiffness when they stand from a seated position, or have trouble getting going in the morning when they get out of bed. Regardless of how it feels, it can interfere with work and play. Not only does Pro-Mobility offer fast relief – one of its active ingredients was shown to help improve joint comfort by an incredible 87% with a potent, plant-based mineral complex with daily use for 90 days.*  Another popular use for Pro-Mobility is helping to relieve delayed onset muscle soreness, which often occurs after intense exercise or activities your muscles are not accustomed to doing regularly.  Supports Healthy Inflammatory Responses According to the Arthritis Foundation, various inflammatory factors can leave you feeling desperate for joint pain relief:*  Synovitis – When the thin membrane (synovium) that lines the joints becomes inflamed, it releases chemicals that irritate nerves and increase fluid in the joint.  Bone erosions – Damaged, pitted bones in your joints can cause pain.   Swollen joint capsule – Fluid builds in the joint from the inflamed synovium, leading to pressure, stiffness and pain.   Ligament damage – The effects of inflammation can damage these bands of flexible tissue that support the joint.  Muscle weakness – Reduced muscle strength puts more stress on joints.  Joint fusion – Small bones that form the backbone (vertebrae) may fuse together, making it harder and more painful to move.  Centralized pain – In some cases, the long-lasting pain of inflammatory conditions can cause you to become more sensitive to pain.   Rescuing your body from the grip of joint inflammation is one of the key benefits of Pro-Mobility. Its high levels of powerful, naturally occurring ingredients, nutrients and antioxidants from green lipped mussels, boswellia serrata and plant-based food sources help boost your immune system’s response to inflammation. Promotes Bone Health While joints and bones may seem like different systems in the body, they’re quite literally connected by pads of cartilage that cover each end of your bones, creating a smooth surface on which bones can glide. But when this cushion wears away from inflammation, usage or both, the friction can limit movement and cause serious discomfort.  In addition to promoting healthier joints and cartilage, multi-tasking Pro-Mobility boosts your bone health in two ways. First, it supplies the building blocks that nourish your bones’ connective tissue fibers, helping them to renew and repair. Secondly, it contains calcium fructoborate, a calcium derivative that supports healthy, strong bones to help reduce your risk of fractures. Meet the Ingredients Pro-Mobility has helped thousands of adults find relief from everyday joint aches and discomfort thanks to an advanced formulation backed by decades of combined research. As mentioned earlier, there are many ingredients used in joint health supplements. This powerful formula combines top-quality sources you won’t find in ordinary supplements for joints to give you a powerful yet convenient natural solution.  Now that you’ve discovered what Pro-Mobility can do to get you back in the game, it’s time to learn about the nutritional heroes that make it possible. Biolane™ Green-Lipped Mussels Extract (GLME)  New Zealand is home to a native mussel that stands out nutritionally from other mollusks and marine life overall for its considerable anti-inflammatory, joint-protecting profile. Green-lipped mussels are abundant in omega-3 fatty acids that counter certain compounds that can trigger inflammation. In fact, New Zealand green-lipped mussels may contain up to 91 fatty acids, including EPA and DHA, according to one study.* One of the top green-lipped mussel benefits is its ability to help rejuvenate and rebuild connective tissue, which is found in your bones, joints, tendons and ligaments. It contains high levels of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), more commonly known as hyaluronic acid. To support healthy joints, one of the critical jobs glycosaminoglycans performs is providing much-needed lubrication, which helps reduce friction and offers joint pain relief. But to experience the highest level of benefits from New Zealand green-lipped mussels, they’re best consumed fresh and at clinically studied daily doses. To preserve the highest freshness and nutritional content, Pro-Mobility features patented Biolane™ Green-Lipped Mussels Extract (GLME), a pure extract of fresh, raw green-lipped mussels from New Zealand that’s loaded with over 35 macro- and micro-nutrients:   Amino Acids Minerals Vitamins Macronutrients Cysteic acid, Aspartic acid, Threonine, Serine, Glutamic acid, Proline, Glycine, Alanine, Cysteine, Valine, Methionine, Iso-leucine, Leucine, Tyrosine, Phenylalanine, Lysine, Histidine arginine Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium, Iron, Zinc, Manganese, Copper, Nickel, Cadmium B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, C, D3, E Protein Fatty lipids Carbohydrates     Backed by over 30 years of clinical research, this superior New Zealand green-lipped mussel extract has been shown to work two ways: 1) Switch-off production of hormones that can trigger inflammation, and 2) Inhibit overactive immune system cells that can turn on joints and connective tissue, leading to degradation.     Every daily serving of Pro-Mobility delivers 1050 mg of 100% Biolane™ Green-Lipped Mussels Extract (GLME) from New Zealand. New Zealand green-lipped mussel benefits: Helps fight joint inflammation and support a normal inflammatory response Provides joint relief from aches, swelling and stiffness Helps relieve delayed onset muscle soreness after intense activities AprèsFlex boswellia serrata For effective, fast-acting benefits starting in 5 days, Pro-Mobility is formulated with a pure, multi-patented form of boswellia serrata called AprèsFlex that offers unparalleled bioavailability and is backed by 10 studies.  Boswellia serrata extract is one of the top supplements for stiff joints. This powerful gum resin is chocked full of compounds that studies show may help minimize joint inflammation by inhibiting enzymes that attack joints, offering joint pain relief.* In addition, its potent antioxidant properties can counter oxidative stress – a “rusting” of cells due to natural aging, environmental toxins and normal cellular processes. But, while the benefits of boswellia serrata are known, the commercially used extracts in most boswellia serrata supplements often contain low levels of active compounds. Compared to basic boswellia serrata supplements, Pro-Mobility’s premium extract contains higher levels of AKBA – one of the key blockers of inflammatory enzymes.* In a clinical study, this boswellia serrata extract was shown to reduce aches and discomfort 56% in 30 days.* AprèsFlex boswellia serrata benefits: Fast-acting benefits starting in as quickly as 5 days* Promotes healthy joints and function by 56% in 30 days and 69% in 90 days Boosts joint flexibility, comfort and range of motion for an active lifestyle This unique boswellia serrata extract was shown to be clinically effective at 100 mg daily. Digging Into Joint Health for Maximum Outdoor Enjoyment

Digging Into Joint Health for Maximum Outdoor Enjoyment

Remember the good ole days? You know that idyllic period of life when our joints were so healthy and new that we mostly forgot we had any? Yeah, me neither. Unfortunately, for the vast majority of adults, joints make us painfully aware of their existence from the moment we roll out of bed in the morning to when our head hits the pillow at night. Joint pain runs rampant through the adult population, with 70% of adults experiencing joint pain across the spectrum of severity and 15 million adults diagnosed with full-blown arthritis. But, what’s at the root of widespread joint pain? Well, for starters, human physiology comes equipped with a considerable number of joints throughout, stretching from our toes to our neck. Our knees, ankles, elbows, and shoulders immediately come to mind when discussing joints, but we possess far more than first meets the eye. In fact, the human body has upwards of 360 joints. While enabling us to move in all sorts of practical and dynamic ways, each of these 360 joints also has the potential to break down over time. This erosion of joint health can result in limitations of movement and chronic pain, ultimately preventing us from living active, healthy lives. After all, it only takes one joint going on the fritz to fundamentally alter our lifestyle and abilities. So, as the spring season gives way to summer, let’s dig into joint health and support as we collectively spend more time outdoors and increase our activity. What Causes Joint Pain? Joints connect and allow movement between our bones. Joints use strong, connective tissues called tendons to integrate into the more extensive musculoskeletal system around them and cartilage to ensure smooth, frictionless movement between bones. Joint pain, broadly speaking, is caused by an array of conditions, like arthritis (inflammation), osteoarthritis (degeneration), bursitis, tendonitis, injury, and infection. The dividing lines between many of these joint conditions are blurred. For instance, an ankle injury that causes acute damage to a joint may heal in the short term. Still, that damage can surface down the road as osteoarthritis as the joint continues to degenerate naturally. Furthermore, joint pain in one area forces us to overcompensate in another, raising the chances of further injury or aggravation. It’s no secret that joint pain can become a vicious cycle of inflammation, stiffness, pain, and incapacitation if not taken seriously. The Pillars of Joint Health & Support Instead of harping on the various types of joint pain, it’s much more helpful to dig straight into how to promote joint health within an active lifestyle. The pillars of joint health and support may seem simple initially but integrating them into daily life is much easier said than done. Flexibility Joint flexibility refers to the degree to which joints can move and operate within their full range of motion. With flexibility comes blood flow, which nurtures and strengthens the cartilage, tendons, and muscles surrounding the joint. A lack of flexibility, and thus a lack of blood flow, plays a large part in the breakdown of joint health over time. Stiff muscles fatigue more rapidly than elongated, flexible ones, creating the conditions for overcompensation, inflammation, and injury. Joint flexibility simultaneously extends range of motion, promotes blood flow, and strengthens the joint systems for reduced chances of injury. So, how can you increase joint flexibility? A stretching routine is crucial to joint health as we age, and our bodies take on more wear and tear. Choosing the right stretches for your routine will depend on which joints need the most support, but the important thing is to dedicate small chunks of time to daily stretching. When it comes to stretching, compliance and consistency are everything. Here are some tips for sticking to a stretching routine, long-term: Layer stretching into well-established habits. For example, if exercising is already a solidified part of your day, try stretching directly before or after every workout. Stacking habits on top of each other helps ingrain new habits. Plus, stacking habits is more time efficient. Set the bar low. You don’t have to stretch for 45 minutes to reap the benefits. For most, even five-to-ten minutes of daily stretching will drastically improve range of motion and overall joint health. Start with a few minutes and ramp it up from there. Choose quality over quantity. Stretching can be intimidating for the uninitiated. It’s uncomfortable when starting, and the sheer number of stretches available can make your head spin. Here’s the thing: you only need to do a few simple stretches well to see a difference. Make stretching active. Yoga and Pilates are great examples of active stretching because they require using your muscles to provide resistance. Active stretching exerts and strengthens joint-supporting muscles while stretching others, all while fostering enhanced blood flow. Movement Do you know the saying, “If you don’t use it, you lose it?” While I don’t know for sure, I’m (somewhat) confident that whoever uttered that phrase was referring to joint health. If joints aren’t used and activated often, they atrophy and weaken. It’s that simple. That’s why regular exercise and habitual movement are essential elements of joint health. Movement keeps joints limber and loose and builds muscle, energizes the body, strengthens bones, controls weight, and improves balance. Movement can be aerobic, like walking, swimming, biking, water aerobics, running, walking up the stairs, or using an elliptical, to name a few. Movement can also be related to enhancing the range of motion and strength of joints, like foam rolling, hanging from a bar, and weight training. It doesn’t have to be high-intensity movement, either. It’s best to start moving at a gentle, measured pace. You can continually ratchet the effort and intensity as you build strength, flexibility, and endurance. The point here is this: It doesn’t matter how you move as long as you are moving regularly. Consistency is more important than intensity. Eat Clean and Hydrate Did you know that over 70% of the cartilage supporting your joints is made of water? Staying hydrated fosters the production of synovial fluid, or joint fluid, which provides a protective layer of cushioning and lubrication between bones and joint cartilage. Dr. Magdalena Cadet, MD, clinical rheumatologist, says that “when we drink water, we not only help stimulate the production of synovial fluid, but also help with cartilage regeneration and lubrication of the cartilage to reduce joint inflammation.” And in a similar vein, an anti-inflammatory diet can also alleviate joint pain. Dietary inflammation can directly result in painful joint conditions like gout (accumulation of uric acid) and exacerbate arthritic conditions. Keeping inflammation at bay through a cleaner diet can yield profound joint benefits. For starters, avoiding processed foods, artificial sugar, and alcohol will limit dietary inflammation. Support Your Active Lifestyle with Joint Supplements Joint supplements can play a significant role in reclaiming and maintaining joint health. Below, we lay out a few of our favorite joint supplements, but make sure you consult your doctor before trying them. Though generally safe, they can cause side effects, allergic reactions, and drug interactions in some people. Boswellia Serrata Extract Boswellia serrata is an herb that has long been used for religious ceremonies in India, North Africa, and the Middle East. It is also a traditional remedy for pain. Studies have found that Boswellia serrata has natural anti-inflammatory properties and may help lessen chronic inflammation. Calcium Fructoborate Calcium fructoborate is a natural substance found in fruits and vegetables and contains boron, which has been shown in studies to support a healthy inflammatory response. Green-Lipped Mussel Extract Green-lipped mussel is a type of shellfish native to New Zealand. While scientists are still investigating the link between joint health and green-lipped mussel extract, one theory is that the unique concentration of omega-3 fatty acids in the mussels affords its joint-protective and anti-inflammatory properties. Luckily, if you’re interested in trying these joint pain supplements, Body Kitchen offers Pro Mobility, an all-in-one joint health solution. Give it a try today, so that you can get back outside tomorrow.

How to Regulate Blood Pressure Naturally with Polyphenols

How to Regulate Blood Pressure Naturally with Polyphenols

You’ve heard it countless times, and you’ll hear it countless more: “Eat more fruits and vegetables.” This dietary rule of thumb has seemingly been around forever. Yet, in the past few decades, technological advancements and rigorous scientific research have uncovered deeper truths about the benefits of eating diets rich in fruits and vegetables Even without having to look at the specific reasons for complying with this standard health recommendation, it still makes plenty of sense on its surface. After all, it’s widely known that fruits and vegetables are natural sources of essential vitamins and minerals that make your body jump for joy. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who disagrees with that view. But why exactly is this the case? What’s happening in your body beyond the simplistic proclamation of “eat them because they’re good for you”? In this article, we’ll take a closer look at one of the many beneficial phytonutrients (healthy compounds produced by plants) that go to bat for your body, called polyphenols. We’ll also examine how they can help regulate blood pressure, alleviate hypertension, and improve overall cardiovascular health. What are polyphenols? Polyphenols are compounds found in plant foods, like vegetables and fruits, and products derived from them, like dark chocolate (cocoa), coffee (coffee beans), green tea (tea plant), and wine (grapes). So far, over 8,000 varieties of polyphenols have been discovered, which can all be sub-categorized into four primary classes: Phenolic Acids Flavonoids Stilbenes Lignans This large and diverse array of polyphenols can be found in all sorts of plant foods (and plant-derived foods), positively affecting health in myriad ways. What are the health benefits of polyphenols? One extensive review on polyphenols, entitled Plant Polyphenols as Dietary Antioxidants in Human Health and Disease, provides a helpful summary of their overarching health benefits, stating that “towards the end of the 20th century, epidemiological studies and associated meta-analyses strongly suggested that long-term consumption of diets rich in plant polyphenols offered some protection against the development of cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis, and neurodegenerative diseases.” For our purposes, the focus will remain on the polyphenols associated with regulating blood pressure in the short term while reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the long run. However, the full scope of polyphenol benefits may be well worth your time to investigate, as the potential effects of their anti-inflammatory properties possess health implications well beyond the heart and throughout the body. What is normal, healthy blood pressure? High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a major risk factor for developing more serious heart health conditions. Your blood pressure is dictated by the relative difficulty or ease by which your heart pumps blood through your body via your arteries and how much blood is being pumped. So, pumping more blood through tighter arteries causes blood pressure to rise. Normal, or healthy, blood pressure falls within the 90/60 mmHg to 120/80 mmHg range, while high blood pressure is any reading above 140/90 mmHG. While all sorts of underlying health conditions can cause hypertension, such as congenital heart defects and thyroid conditions, the reasons behind the incremental increase in blood pressure resulting in hypertension are still largely unknown. With that said, specific health issues are known to exacerbate and complicate blood pressure issues, such as obesity, overeating, high-salt diets, sedentary lifestyles, excessive alcohol or coffee consumption, stress, and smoking. How do polyphenols regulate blood pressure? One thing we know for sure (simply by looking at the definition of high blood pressure) is that vascular health is imperative to regulating blood pressure within the normal range. A significant risk to vascular health is Inflammation of the arteries. Inflamed arteries cause plaque to form, which in turn raises blood pressure and triggers even more plaque to collect, creating a positive feedback loop with some potential adverse consequences. And that’s precisely where certain polyphenols may be able to help - defending against chronic inflammation of the arteries and subsequently resulting in normalized blood pressure. This 2019 study explores the relationship between dietary polyphenols and blood pressure. It asserts that “flavonoids have been found to exert beneficial effects towards the cardiovascular system through their antioxidant and antiradical action, exerted through various molecular mechanisms, and importantly, as demonstrated in both experimental and clinical studies, altered oxidative imbalance is linked to higher cardiovascular risk.” This study concludes that polyphenols, flavonoids in this case, have been found to reduce oxidative stress (a prime culprit in chronic inflammation) by “exerting blood vessel relaxation, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antithrombotic effects.” The takeaway is this: Adding polyphenols into your diet by way of increased servings of plant foods can assist in the mitigation of vascular inflammation and help to regulate blood pressure to within the normal range. Diversification is the key to reaping the rewards of Polyphenols Even though specific polyphenols have been linked to certain health outcomes, those links are still loose approximations and could be more correlative than causal. For instance, lignans have been found to lower inflammation markers in the body. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean an anti-inflammatory diet should strictly revolve around foods rich in lignans (such as nuts, seeds, oats, and legumes). Instead, foods laden with lignans are often recommended to be incorporated into a broader health-conscious diet, so the still-mysterious synergistic effects of a polyphenol-heavy diet can be enjoyed. The same logic applies to polyphenols known to positively influence heart health. A 2022 study concluded that, while the health benefits of polyphenols are abundantly apparent, “there is no singular mechanism nor individual polyphenol compound that may explain the pathway to improve endothelial health and prevent hypertension and CVD. This recommended variety in the consumption of plant foods walks in step with a Harvard analysis suggesting that five servings of fruits and vegetables daily can reduce the risk of death from heart disease or stroke by 12%. Polyphenols may play a part in that 12% reduction, but with so many concurrent and complicated factors at play, it’s better to take a holistic approach to “plant-ifying” your diet. Which foods contain polyphenols for blood pressure regulation? Now that we’ve established the health benefits of polyphenols, limiting inflammation, and supporting heart health, it’s time to look at specific polyphenols and foods that contains them. The above 2022 study also covers the dietary polyphenols to incorporate into your diet for overall heart health, breaking them into four sub-categories: Anthocyanins Mulberries, elderberries, cherries, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, plums, black beans, red wine, red onions, currants, pomegranates, and eggplants. Flavan-3-ols Apples, mulberries, elderberries, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, pears, chocolate, and other cocoa products. Hydroxycinnamic Acids Grapes, tea, cocoa, cocoa products, spinach, celery, brassicas vegetables, and citrus fruits. Isoflavones Soy, red clover, peas, chickpeas, peanuts, lima beans, green tea, lentils, and flax seeds. Natural Supplements for High Blood Pressure Bodykitchen’s Blood Pressure Balance is packed with polyphenols (among other natural nutrients like magnesium), making it a perfect natural blood pressure supplement to support your healthy diet and regulate your blood pressure. While Blood Pressure Balance  can play a role in your blood pressure care plan, you may need to change your diet, exercise more, and use additional treatments to get your pressure levels into the ideal range. Speak with your healthcare provider about whether blood pressure supplements are right for you.
